Improving Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP and CLS in practice

Core Web Vitals are a Google ranking factor and help decide bounce and conversion rates. In 2026 only around 47 percent of pages hit all three "good" thresholds – the rest lose 8 to 35 percent in conversions and revenue. This practical guide uses current benchmarks to explain what LCP, INP and CLS mean and which measures will improve them in a targeted way.

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to assess a page's user experience: load time (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS). They are a confirmed ranking factor and help decide how many visitors stay. Google measures the real user experience (field data) at the 75th percentile – 75 percent of views have to be "good" for a page to pass. The target values:

Why fast load times pay off financially

Performance isn't a technical detail – it's a revenue question. Just one more second of load time cuts conversions by around 7 percent; for a shop with €100,000 monthly revenue that's roughly €7,000 a month, or €84,000 a year. Conversely, e-commerce pages that hit all three thresholds show 15 to 30 percent higher conversion rates. Bounce rate reacts sharply too: pages under 2 seconds load time have around 9 percent bounces, while beyond 5 seconds the figure rises to 38 percent.

Improving LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

LCP measures when the largest visible element has loaded. Target: under 2.5 seconds. The four most effective levers:

Load the LCP image with priority using fetchpriority="high" and preload.
Compress images and serve them as WebP/AVIF – that alone saves 25–35 % in file size.
Inline critical CSS and remove render-blocking resources.
Fast hosting + CDN for short server response times.

Improving INP – the most common problem case

INP replaced the older FID metric in 2024 and measures responsiveness across the whole interaction. At 43 percent, it's the most frequently failed metric in 2026 – because it requires a rethink of JavaScript. The main cause is heavy JS execution. The fix:

Break up long tasks and give the main thread room during interactions (yielding).
Code-splitting and defer for all non-critical scripts.
Reduce third-party scripts (tracking, widgets, chat).
Minimise DOM complexity – fewer nodes, faster response.

Improving CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)

CLS measures how much elements jump around during loading. Target: under 0.1. The measures are clearly defined: reserve a fixed width and height for every image, video, iframe and ad, hold space for dynamic content, and load fonts with font-display: swap plus pre-reserved space so nothing jumps.

Measure & prioritise the right way
