The complete Local SEO guide – from invisible to Local Pack top 3.

Local visibility is the most important lever for any provider with a physical location or regional catchment area. This guide shows step by step how to systematically reach the Local Pack – even for competitive search queries.

Why Local SEO works differently today than classic SEO

Local search differs from classic SEO in one decisive point: Google doesn't show a list of blue links, but a map view with three highlighted businesses – the Local Pack. Whoever's in it wins; whoever lands in position 4 is practically invisible. Studies show that 44 % of local clicks go to the top 3 in the Local Pack.

On top of that, local search queries carry high purchase intent. 76 % of local searches lead to a business visit within 24 hours, and 28 % end in a purchase the same day. Anyone not present here loses not "clicks," but real inquiries.

Step 1 · Google Business Profile as the foundation

The Google Business Profile (GBP) is more important than your own website for local providers. Over 60 % of first contacts now run directly through a profile call, directions or profile booking. Essential optimizations:

  • Primary category + 3–5 secondary categories – the single most important ranking lever. If you have "Italian restaurant" as your primary category, you won't appear for other cuisines.
  • NAP exactly as on the website – name, address and phone must match character for character.
  • Description with a benefit focus – 750 characters, no keyword-stuffing tirade.
  • Photo pool of 20+ current images – exterior, interior, team, products, work in progress.
  • Weekly posts – an activity signal to Google.
  • Pre-fill the Q&A section yourself – the ten most common customer questions.
A complete, well-maintained GBP generates on average 5 times more profile views than an incomplete one – with no ad budget.

Step 2 · Establish NAP consistency

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. These three data points must be character-for-character identical: on your website, in the GBP, in every industry directory, in citation platforms. Inconsistent spellings (sometimes "GmbH", sometimes "GmbH & Co. KG", sometimes a phone number with 030/, sometimes with +49 30) signal uncertainty to Google and push down your Local Pack visibility.

Practical tip: define a master spelling in an internal document and propagate it across all sources. Every change then runs only through this master.

Step 3 · Citations & industry directories

Citations are mentions of your business with NAP data in online directories. They act as an external confirmation signal for Google. Three categories:

  1. Top directories – Gelbe Seiten, Branchenbuch, Yelp, GoLocal, Cylex, 11880.
  2. Industry directories – Jameda for doctors, lawyer directories, the Handwerksrolle, industry-specific portals.
  3. Local directories – city portals, IHK listings, regional associations, tourism platforms.

Quality beats quantity: 15–30 high-quality, topically relevant citations are better than 200 generic entries in obscure link farms.

Step 4 · Build a review strategy

88 % of consumers read online reviews before an in-person visit. The accepted trust threshold sits at an average of 4.4 stars. Three pillars:

  • Active review request right after a service is delivered – by email, SMS or QR code. The conversion rate typically rises by a factor of 4–8.
  • Professional responses within 24 hours to all reviews – short, personal, case-specific. For criticism: understanding, an offer of a solution, a channel switch.
  • Early-warning system for every new review – you react before negative reviews take effect.

What you shouldn't do: buy or fake reviews. Google increasingly detects this and suspends profiles.

Step 5 · Local content

Local content creates visibility for "near me" searches and district-specific queries. Four format recommendations:

  • Location pages per branch – with unique content (no copy-paste): team, directions, parking, local recommendations.
  • District guides – for local industry topics ("Best daycare choice in [district]" for family-focused providers).
  • Local FAQs – "How long does a heating repair in [city] take?"
  • Local backlinks – from city portals, regional media, associations.

Step 6 · Monitoring & KPIs

Four metrics we track monthly:

  • Local Pack position for your main keywords (with geo variation)
  • Profile views from Search vs. Maps
  • Calls and directions from the profile (a direct conversion indicator)
  • Review development (count, average, sentiment)

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to reach the Local Pack?

First movement typically in 2–4 weeks, a stable top-3 position for main keywords in 3–6 months – depending on the competition.

Does Local SEO work without a storefront?

Yes, via the service-area business profile. You don't list a public address, but the profile still appears in the Local Pack for your service area.

Do I need my own website or is the profile enough?

For minimal visibility, an optimized profile is enough. For full impact (conversion, brand authority, AI visibility) you also need a website – the two reinforce each other.
