GEO guide – how to get cited as a source in ChatGPT, Perplexity & Gemini.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the newest visibility discipline: optimizing for AI answers instead of result listings. Build early here and you gain a lead that's almost impossible to catch up.

What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline that makes sure your content is cited as a source in the answers of generative AI. Where SEO places your website in a list of results, GEO makes sure your brand is named and linked directly in the AI answer.

A Princeton study shows that content with high factual density and source citations is cited as a source in generative AI answers up to 40 % more often than comparable content without those signals.

SEO vs. GEO – the differences

The two disciplines overlap (good content helps both) but differ in weighting:

  • SEO weights backlinks, on-page signals and crawlability very heavily.
  • GEO additionally weights factual density, entity consistency, authorship, schema markup and reputation signals.

Important: GEO doesn't replace SEO – it extends it. If you don't rank on Google, you also get cited less often in AI answers.

The four most important AI models

Each model has its own logic:

  • ChatGPT – training corpus + browsing via Bing. Key levers: schema, factual density, brand consistency, backlink authority.
  • Perplexity – live web. Key levers: freshness, clear sources, FAQ structure. Time to effect: 2–6 weeks.
  • Google Gemini – Google index + AI data. Key levers: SEO basics, structured data, AI Overview optimization, E-E-A-T.
  • Google AI Overviews – live. Key levers: featured-snippet structures, question-based headlines, clear answers.

The six most important GEO levers

  1. Factual density – statements that can be cited on their own. Instead of "We help companies become visible" → "Companies with a well-kept Google Business Profile generate on average 5 times more views than incomplete profiles."
  2. Schema markup – machine-readable structures for Organization, Service, Article, FAQPage, Person.
  3. Authorship with Person schema, profile linking via sameAs.
  4. Last-updated date visible and in the schema – important above all for Perplexity.
  5. Entity consistency – your brand must be presented consistently across your website, Wikipedia, LinkedIn and GBP.
  6. Reputation – mentions in trade media, industry portals and independent sources.

Schema markup for AI – example

A JSON-LD block for a service page:

// Service schema example
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Service",
  "name": "Local SEO Betreuung",
  "provider": {
    "@type": "Organization",
    "name": "Loomup",
    "url": "https://loomup.io"
  },
  "areaServed": "DE"
}

How we measure GEO

Four KPIs, tracked separately per AI model:

  • Visibility Percentage – the share of queries in which your brand appears
  • Share of Model – the share of all cited sources that go to you
  • Citation Rate – how often you appear as a linked source
  • Sentiment Score – the tone in which AI talks about you

How to start with GEO today

Three quick wins you can implement in the short term:

  1. Add FAQ blocks with FAQPage schema – often shows an effect within 4–8 weeks in Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.
  2. Increase factual density – at least 5–8 independently citable statements with a source per pillar piece.
  3. Build author profiles – Person schema, sameAs linking to LinkedIn, visible experience and a last-updated date.
