Fully optimizing your Google Business Profile – the 10 biggest levers.

The Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly Google My Business) is the most important visibility channel for local providers. This guide shows you with concrete click-by-click instructions how to take your profile from "empty" to "fully optimized" – in under 4 hours.

TL;DR

A complete profile generates on average 5 times more views than an incomplete one. The most important levers: categories, NAP consistency, photo pool, posts, review pipeline.

Lever 1 · Choosing the right categories

The primary category is the single most important ranking factor for the Local Pack. Choose "restaurant" instead of the more specific "Italian restaurant" and you give away visibility for highly relevant searches. Tip: analyse competitor profiles – which categories do the Local Pack top 3 use? Plus 3–5 fitting secondary categories.

Lever 2 · Keeping NAP data consistent

Name, address and phone number must match your website and every directory listing character for character. Inconsistencies cost Local-Pack visibility – Google reads them as uncertainty.

Lever 3 · A benefit-focused description

750 characters, no keyword stuffing. Start with a clear benefit statement ("We restore historic wooden windows across the greater Stuttgart area"), then concrete USPs, and finish with your most important services. No advertising clichés.

Lever 4 · A complete photo pool

At least 20 photos across four categories:

  • Exterior view (recognition, finding you)
  • Interior (atmosphere, trust)
  • Team (closeness, personality)
  • Work in progress / products (competence)

Important: add 1–3 new photos every week – an activity signal to Google.

Lever 5 · Weekly posts

Google posts are short updates right in your profile. They show you're active and rank alongside specific search queries. Types: offer, update, event, seasonal deal. At least 1 post per week, ideally 2–3.

Lever 6 · Pre-fill the Q&A

In the Q&A section customers can ask questions – but you can also post and answer questions yourself. Use that to clear up the ten most common questions in advance. It saves time on first contact and works for AI searches.

Lever 7 · Maintain services & products

If your profile offers services/products, keep them up to date with a description and price. Google uses this for "which provider has X?" searches.

Lever 8 · Activate a review pipeline

A friendly review request straight after a service is delivered – by email, SMS or QR code. The conversion rate typically rises by a factor of 4–8. Respond to every review within 24 hours, professionally and personally.

Lever 9 · Integrate a booking or call link

Shorten the path from profile to conversion. Online appointment booking, a call button, a reservation link – anything that saves users a click increases conversion.

Lever 10 · Use the insights

GBP shows in the dashboard where views come from, which search queries lead to you, and how many calls were triggered. Review it monthly – you'll see which measures are working.

Common mistakes

Multiple profiles for the same address

Google penalises duplicates. If duplicate profiles exist by accident, request a merge from support.

Categories too general

Be specific ("dentist for implantology") rather than generic ("dentist") – you'll rank better for the searches that actually bring clients.

Profile updates without a strategy

If there's no visible activity for three months, the profile drops in the ranking. Weekly posts clearly reduce that risk.
