TL;DR

In short: SEO (search engine optimization) drives rankings in classic Google search, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) drives citations in AI answers. Both build on the same foundations, high-quality, structured content and trust signals. GEO doesn't replace SEO, it extends it. If you rank in Google, you also get named more often in AI answers.

Why GEO and SEO share the same root

However different the output, the foundation is almost identical. Both Google and large language models reward content that is clearly structured, factually correct, thematically deep and trustworthy. A page with clean tech, unambiguous entities, evidenced claims and credible authorship ranks in Google and gets preferentially cited by AI. That's why GEO is no counter-model to SEO, but its logical extension: the same substance, additionally prepared for extraction by machines.

Decision guide

When SEO, when GEO, when both?

Start with SEO if your technical and content base isn't in place yet, it's the foundation for both.
Add GEO once the base is solid and your audience increasingly makes buying decisions via ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews.
Combine both for maximum visibility, the investments pay into each other.
GEO alone, without SEO, rarely works, because AI models build heavily on established, well-ranking sources.
FAQ

Common questions

Does GEO replace classic SEO?

No. GEO complements SEO, but doesn't replace it. Both build on the same foundations, and well-ranking pages get cited more often by AI systems. The strongest effect comes from combining the two.

What should I tackle first, SEO or GEO?

Usually the SEO base first: clean tech, good content and authority. GEO builds on top of that. If the base is already there, both can be expanded in parallel.

Can you even measure AI visibility?

Yes, via Share of Model, the share of relevant AI answers in which your brand appears as a source or recommendation, measured across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.
