Google AI Overviews: What's Changing for Organic Search

By Lion Donath · Founder & Head of Technology and SEO · last updated June 2026 · 12 min read

Google increasingly answers search queries directly with an AI summary above the results, the AI Overview. A randomized field study (January–February 2026) shows that on affected searches, organic clicks drop by 38 percent and the zero-click share rises from 54 to 72 percent. This article uses current data to explain what's changing, who wins, and how you stay visible.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated answer summaries that Google displays above the classic search results, linking to a handful of sources. Instead of comparing ten blue links, users get a direct answer, often before they click on a single result. Since their launch in 2024, by 2026 the Overviews already appear on roughly half of all Google searches, reshaping the very foundation of organic visibility.

The data: how sharply AI Overviews cut clicks

The numbers are unambiguous. A randomized field study with 1,065 users (January to February 2026) found that when an AI Overview appears, organic clicks fall by 38 percent and the share of searches with no click at all rises from 54 to 72 percent. User satisfaction stayed virtually unchanged, which means the summaries divert traffic away from websites without measurably improving the search experience.

Further analyses confirm the picture. Ahrefs measures a CTR decline of up to 58 percent for top placements as soon as an Overview appears. BrightEdge observes that the click rate on the first organic result drops from 27 to 11 percent, while impressions actually rise 49 percent year over year. Visibility alone no longer automatically means traffic.

The rise in zero-click search is not a new phenomenon, but AI Overviews are accelerating it sharply. The comparison below shows how click probability differs with and without an Overview:

Why Google is introducing AI Overviews

There's a strategic motive behind AI Overviews: Google wants to answer queries directly and faster, and to hold its ground against AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, which have long done exactly that. The classic list of links becomes the exception, the summarized answer the norm. For users this is convenient. For websites it means a growing share of the value is created on the search results page itself, no longer on your own site.

This also shifts the central SEO question: it's no longer just about ranking, but about being cited in the answer. That is precisely the core of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Who loses, and who wins

  • Under pressure are thin, purely informational pages with no added value of their own, since the Overview already delivers their answer. Pure how-to and definition pages are hit hardest.
  • Winning are pages with real substance: original data, first-hand accounts, tools, comparisons and transactional content a summary cannot replace.
  • Benefiting are brands with a strong entity: those established as a trusted source get cited more often, and citations pay off measurably.

The most important piece of good news: brands named as a source in an AI Overview receive, according to 2026 industry data, around 35 percent more organic and 91 percent more paid clicks than competitors who aren't cited. Visibility is shifting from pure ranking toward being cited, and those who do both stay ahead.

The situation in Germany

The German market is catching up: around 20 percent of searches in Germany already show an AI Overview in 2026, and that share is climbing. Industry analyses put the loss at roughly 265 million organic clicks per month. Information-heavy fields are hit hardest. From the health sector alone come 11 of the 20 most affected websites, some losing more than 30 percent of their traffic. For German companies the message is clear: waiting is the most expensive option.

How to get cited in AI Overviews

Google draws the sources for its Overviews mostly from the organic top 10, with over 99 percent of citations coming from there. At the same time, positions 4 to 20 are also used when the content is easy to extract and trustworthy. Classic SEO remains the entry ticket, but citability is what counts. The key factors in 2026:

Rank organically in the top 10, the basic prerequisite; without solid SEO, no citation.
Semantic completeness: answer questions in self-contained blocks of around 130–170 words, since such passages are cited 4.2× more often.
Multimodal content: images, tables and charts, the most strongly correlating new selection factor in 2026.
E-E-A-T: named authors, original data and sources; 96 percent of citations come from pages with strong E-E-A-T signals.
Entity density: pages with 15+ clearly recognizable entities are selected around 4.8× more often.
Schema markup & freshness: FAQPage and Article data plus maintained, dated content increase extractability.

What companies should do now

  • Write answer-first: answer key questions directly and concisely so Google can lift the passage easily.
  • Create real substance: data, examples and experience no summary can replace, which protects you from the zero-click effect.
  • Use visual elements: charts, tables and images demonstrably raise the chance of being cited.
  • Strengthen your brand entity: consistent information and mentions on trusted sources, the core of GEO.
  • Measure AI visibility: a GEO audit shows where you're cited today, and where you're not.

AI Overviews are no reason to panic, but they are a clear signal: search is becoming an answer engine. Those who make content citable and establish their brand as a reliable source win under this new logic, instead of simply losing traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews hurt my SEO traffic?

On informational queries, click rates drop measurably, with a 2026 field study showing minus 38 percent on affected searches. Transactional and substantial content is less affected. What becomes decisive is being named as a source in the Overview, since cited brands actually gain clicks.

How many searches already show an AI Overview?

In 2026, AI Overviews appear on roughly half of all Google searches worldwide; in Germany it's around 20 percent and rising. They're especially common for information-oriented questions.

How do I get named as a source in AI Overviews?

By ranking organically in the top 10, answering questions in self-contained, fact-dense blocks, using multimodal content and schema markup, and building a strong brand entity. At its core, that's Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

Are AI Overviews the same as ChatGPT?

No, but they're related. AI Overviews are Google's AI answers within search; ChatGPT is a standalone chatbot. Both summarize answers and name sources, and the optimization for it is called GEO in either case.
