How do I get recommended in ChatGPT? The 7 most important levers

By Lion Donath · Founder & Head of Technology and SEO · last updated June 2026 · 12 min read

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for recommendations – and only get a few brands named. Referral traffic from ChatGPT grew by 206 percent year over year in 2026. This article uses current data to show the seven levers that decide whether an AI cites your brand – and how to measure it.

Why AI names some brands – and not others

ChatGPT and other language models recommend brands that are mentioned frequently, consistently and in trustworthy contexts across the web. Models draw their knowledge from two sources: the training data (what was on the web when the model was trained) and – for connected models like ChatGPT Search or Perplexity – live retrieval during the query. In both cases, it's not one trick that decides, but the sum of reliable signals. Especially telling: brand mentions correlate roughly 3× more strongly with AI visibility than classic backlinks.

How relevant is AI traffic already – an honest take

In short: still small, but growing fast. ChatGPT's referral traffic currently makes up only around 0.2 percent of all sessions – roughly 200 times less than organic Google search. But the growth curve points steeply upward: across more than 94 e-commerce brands, ChatGPT sessions rose in 2025 from 1,544 in January to 18,202 in December – an increase of over 1,000 percent.

On top of that comes quality: several studies find that AI visitors convert above average – Seer Interactive measures a 4.4× conversion rate compared to classic organic search. So being visible early secures a growing, high-quality channel before it gets crowded.

The 7 most important levers

In practice, these seven levers decide whether an AI names your brand as a source or recommendation – each with the underlying data point:

  1. Fact density & statistics: content with concrete numbers and evidence performs 30–40 percent better in generative visibility than generic text.
  2. Clear, extractable structure: question-and-answer blocks and short, self-contained paragraphs that a model can lift without context.
  3. Entity consistency: name, services and core data identical everywhere on the web – so the AI maps your brand unambiguously.
  4. Mentions & earned media: AI favors third-party sources like Reddit, Wikipedia, industry media and directories. Mentions work 3× more strongly than backlinks – and broad distribution lifts citations by up to 325 percent.
  5. Schema markup: structured data improves LLM findability by around 67 percent.
  6. Visible authorship (E-E-A-T): named authors with experience and evidence build trust – a central selection criterion.
  7. Freshness: AI systems favor fresh content; observers note a "3-month citation cliff," after which unmaintained content loses citability.

Notably, these levers overlap heavily with good SEO. Anyone running solid search engine optimization is halfway there – GEO builds on top and additionally tunes content for machine extraction and external mentions.

SEO or LLM visibility – where's the difference?

A brand can rank number 1 on Google and be completely absent from ChatGPT's answer to the same question. The two worlds overlap, but follow different logic:

How to measure AI visibility

The key metric is Share of Model: the proportion of relevant AI answers in which your brand appears as a source or recommendation. To track it, you define your audience's typical search intents, run them systematically against several models (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) and evaluate whether, how and with which source the brand appears. That turns a gut feeling into a measurable metric you can track over time – the basis of every GEO audit.

What you should do now, concretely

  • Make content citable: facts, definitions and answer-first paragraphs instead of ad-speak.
  • Build earned media: be present in industry media, directories and relevant communities.
  • Add schema & authorship and update content regularly.
  • Measure instead of guess: capture Share of Model regularly across several models.

Frequently asked questions

Can I actively influence what ChatGPT says about me?

You can't steer a model directly, but you can shape the underlying signals: consistent, correct information on your own site and on trustworthy third-party sources. Over time, that changes how AI portrays your brand.

How long does it take to get named in ChatGPT?

First mentions in live-connected models like Perplexity often appear after 4 to 6 weeks. For purely training-based answers it takes longer, because they're tied to model updates. Citations from today's content also carry over into future generations.

Are backlinks or mentions more important for AI?

For AI visibility, brand mentions matter more – they correlate roughly 3× more strongly with citations than classic backlinks. The key is being named in the sources the AI trusts: industry media, directories, communities.

Do I still need SEO for this?

Yes, SEO is the foundation. AI models rely heavily on well-findable, established sources. Without a solid SEO base, the signals GEO orients itself around are missing.
